Common questions

What are the quiet hours?

Section 4 of the captured bylaw restricts disturbing noise before 7 a.m. and after 10 p.m. every day. These hours do not override the separate restrictions on particular noise sources.

Section 4(a)–(b)

Is daytime noise unrestricted?

No. Section 6 separately prohibits amplified sound that disturbs nearby people and animal or bird noise that unduly disturbs the neighbourhood, without limiting those clauses to nighttime.

Section 6(a)–(b)

When can construction take place?

Disturbing construction, repair, demolition, excavation or filling is restricted before 7 a.m. and after 10 p.m. Written approval may allow necessary work for a specified period where compliance is impossible or impractical.

Section 5(a)–(b)

What about lawn and garden equipment?

A separate lawn-equipment schedule has not been established from this source. The general disturbing-noise restriction before 7 a.m. and after 10 p.m. still needs to be considered.

Section 4(a)–(b)

What exceptions apply?

Section 7 includes specified emergency work and vehicles, church bells, licensed dance halls during stated hours, qualifying industry, written permission for restricted-hours work and approved public gatherings. Each exception has its own conditions.

Section 7(a)

What penalties are specified?

Section 10 makes each day of a continuing violation a separate offence and refers to penalties under the Offence Act. A current dollar fine has not been established in this review.

Section 10

How do I report a noise concern?

The City's bylaw request tracker includes a Noise Which Disturbs category. Follow the municipal reporting instructions; GovAnswers does not receive municipal complaints.
