The Town of Bridgewater Achievement Awards policy provides an opportunity for the Town
of Bridgewater to recognize individuals, teams and groups who have brought honour and
recognition to the community based on their achievements. The Town of Bridgewater
Achievement Awards are presented for accomplishments in education, arts, culture, sport,
recreational pursuits and other special achievements at a provincial, national and
international level. This is a celebration of the spirit, imagination, dedication and
outstanding contribution of Bridgewater residents.
Recognition
Council will recognize and honour individuals, groups and organizations at a public council
meeting where the Mayor or designate will:

Summarize the accomplishment;

Present individuals with an engraved Town medallion;
-
Present teams, clubs or organizations with a mounted Town Medallion with an
engraved plate;
-
Pose for a commendation photo with the recipients(s);
-
A photo may be posted on the Town of Bridgewater Facebook and/or website.
Nomination Criteria:
Sports - Individual
-
Individuals who have achieved 1st place recognition at the Provincial level or have
represented the Province of Nova Scotia at a National competition, or have
represented Canada at an International Championship;

The Championships recognized for eligibility at the Provincial, National or
International level will be those championships recognized by that sport's governing
body. Zone, division or district championships do not qualify.

Individuals must be a resident of the Town of Bridgewater at the time of their
achievement, with the following exception: Individuals representing a Town service
(whether a resident of Bridgewater or not) such as the Bridgewater Fire Department
will be recognized;

Individuals competing in an event with 5 or less team members (such as relays,
doubles, and small teams) will be considered as individuals. Only Bridgewater
residents will be recognized for this achievement.
Sports - Team/Club/Organizations

Teams, clubs and organizations who have achieved 1st place recognition at the
Provincial level or have represented the province at a National competition, or have
represented Canada at an International Championship;

The Championships recognized for eligibility at the Provincial, National or
International level will be those championships recognized by that sport's governing
body. Zone, division or district championships do not qualify;

All teams representing the Town of Bridgewater (i.e. one of its facilities), whether
50%+ of the members are residents or not, will be eligible for an award. e.g.
Bridgewater Baseball Association, the Bridgewater Barracudas Swim Club or
Bridgewater Tennis Club. All team members (residents and non-residents of
Bridgewater and coaches will be included in this recognition);

50% or more of team membership for regional teams must be a resident of the Town
of Bridgewater at the time of their achievement. All team members (residents and
non-residents of Bridgewater) and coaches will be included in this recognition;

Teams representing Town services (whether a resident of Bridgewater or not) such
as the Bridgewater Fire Department will be recognized.
Arts, Culture, Education, Recreation or other Special Achievements
-
An individual or group who has won a 1st place award at the provincial, national or
international level in the arts, culture, education or recreation. The achievement may
also include achievements that have brought honour to the community, such as
debates, or public speaking etc.;

50% or more of group membership must reside within the Town of Bridgewater;
-
Individuals or groups must be a resident of the Town of Bridgewater at the time of
their achievement, with the following exception: Individuals or groups representing
a Town service (whether a resident of Bridgewater or not) will be recognized;

The Selection Committee reserves the right to consider additional Awards based on
qualified nominations being received and accepted by the Committee.

Nomination Procedure
-
An application form may be completed, naming an individual, team or organization
and identifying their accomplishment at a provincial, national or international level.
This form will be received and processed by the Town of Bridgewater, Parks,
Recreation & Culture Department. Forms can be picked up at the Parks, Recreation
& Culture office, located at 60 Pleasant Street or can be found at
www.bridgewater.ca. For further information (902) 543.2274 can be called.

The Parks, Recreation & Culture Department may also gather documentation
through newspaper articles for assessment by the Selection Committee.

All nominations will be reviewed by the Selection Committee for final approval. The
Committee is made up of the Mayor (or designate), CAO & Parks, Recreation &
Culture Dept. Director and Admin Assistant.
