Halifax noise rules
Halifax Regional Municipality, Nova Scotia. Residential-area schedules and special exemptions matter.
Halifax's captured noise bylaw uses different schedules for music, domestic power tools, construction and rock breaking. For activities assigned Time A, restrictions apply before 7 a.m. and after 9:30 p.m. weekdays, before 8 a.m. and after 7 p.m. Saturdays, and before 9 a.m. and after 7 p.m. Sundays and listed holidays. Unreasonable disturbance can also be prohibited at other times.

What are the quiet hours?
For activities assigned Schedule A Time A, restrictions are weekdays before 7 a.m. and after 9:30 p.m.; Saturdays before 8 a.m. and after 7 p.m.; and Sundays, statutory or civic holidays and Remembrance Day before 9 a.m. and after 7 p.m. This is not the schedule for every type of noise.
Schedule A, Prohibited Time A · Schedule A, Part 3, item 5Is daytime noise unrestricted?
No. Section 3 prohibits activities that unreasonably disturb or tend to disturb the peace and tranquillity of a neighbourhood, without restricting that general prohibition to nighttime.
Section 3When can construction take place?
The residential construction schedule (Time E) restricts work before 7 a.m. or after 8 p.m. weekdays, before 8 a.m. or after 7 p.m. Saturdays, and before 9 a.m. or after 7 p.m. Sundays and listed holidays. Rock breaking uses Time F: weekdays 8 a.m.–6 p.m. only. Concrete pouring and finishing use the separate Time G schedule. Approved exemptions may change these limits.

Outdoor power tools for domestic purposes, other than snow removal, are assigned Time A in the residential-area schedule. Those hours differ between weekdays, Saturdays, and Sundays or holidays.

The bylaw contains conditional exceptions for emergencies, specified public and utility work, certain municipal activities, listed festive or religious activities and other circumstances. It also provides application processes for exemptions. A particular event or construction site needs its own check.
Sections 4–6E and Schedules B–DWhat penalties are specified?
Section 8 specifies conviction penalties with minimums of $300 for a first offence, $700 for a second and $1,000 for a third or subsequent offence, each up to $10,000. It also contains imprisonment provisions. These are not a promise of the ticket or outcome of a complaint.
