POLICY #2019-12-53 VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR RECOGNITION POLICY Purpose 1. To recognize volunteer contributions that take place in the Municipality of Pictou County; 2. To recognize volunteer contributions of individuals residing in the Municipality of Pictou County. Objective 3. To establish a process for nominating and selecting volunteers to be recognized that is fair and consistent; 4. To identify criteria upon which volunteers are selected for nomination. Background 5. Each year the Municipality of Pictou County honors the work of their hard-working volunteers at a reception dinner during Provincial Volunteer Week. During this reception, volunteers are recognized for their work in the community, including the individual selected to represent the Municipality at the Provincial Volunteer Awards. Criteria 6. Individuals nominated for recognition must meet one or more of the following requirements to be eligible for participation: a. Nominees must be residents of the Municipality of Pictou County, or b. Nominees must volunteer for a community/recreation/sport group within the Municipality of Pictou County; c. An individual may not be nominated for recognition if they have received the award within the last 5 years. Selection Process 7. A call for nominations will be sent out through local and social media. a. Nominee applications are reviewed and selected by Council. Councillors will independently select their top 3 choices for recognition and submit them to staff. Staff will then score the top 3 volunteers selected by Council members based on a points system. Three points will be scored for first place, two points for second place, and one point for third place. The nominee with the highest number of points will be selected as the "Volunteer of the Year". Repeal All former policies and/or practices with respect to the nomination and selection of a "Volunteer of the Year" are hereby repealed.
