## SUBJECT: STREET NAMING AND
POLICY NO: 25

## PURPOSE:
This Policy will provide:
1. A process for selecting and approving names.
2. Guidelines to assist in choosing names.
3. A process for assigning street numbers.
4. An official list of names with provisions for regular updating.
## PROCESS FOR SELECTION AND APPROVAL:
All names shall be approved by Town Council.
Developers or groups that have made a major contribution or have a vested interest in the new or expanded subdivision or area shall be consulted prior to the final selection of a street name. This shall include:
1. Subdivision developers.
2. Neighbourhood associations where applicable.
3. Homeowners on streets where Council deems the street name must be changed.
4. Provincial and federal government departments relating to the provision of mail delivery and emergency response systems.
## PROCESS FOR SELECTION AND APPROVAL:
If no such consultation is required or Council is not provided with an acceptable name, Town Council may select a name using one of the following methods:
1. Select a name of its own choosing based on cultural significance.
2. Select a name of its own choosing based on historical significance
3. Refer the selection of a name to a Committee of Council for suggestions or recommendation.
4. Hold a public contest to generate name suggestions.
## SELECTION GUIDELINES:
Streets may be named after:
1. Cultural names of particular appropriateness.
2. Pioneers.
3. Citizens who have provided longstanding service to the Town.
4. Land donors.
5. Original Landowners.
The above are suggestions only. Town Council may choose a name using other criteria as it deems appropriate.
## SIGNAGE:
Requests for new street name signs are forwarded in writing to Department of Transportation & Public Works.
## OFFICIAL STREET NAME LIST:
An official existing Town of Stratford Street Name list shall is provided as Appendix "I" to this policy. This list shall be updated periodically so as to provide an ongoing record of official names.
## STREET NUMBERING:
Street numbering in new subdivisions shall be conducted in conjunction with Canada Post. Numbers shall be assigned on the basis of a four number interval. In existing areas the new street numbering should conform with existing numbers.
## ADDITIONAL CRITERIA FOR STREET NAMING:
Additional criteria for street naming as established by provincial and federal government departments relating to the provision of mail delivery and emergency response systems is attached as Appendix "II."
## COMPILATION OF NEW STREET NAMES:
A list of potential new street names, as selected and approved by Town Council, will be compiled and attached to this policy as Appendix "III.
